Culture, History, and Business

Founded in 43 AD by the Romans, London was called Londinium in the third century. Londinium declined during the fifth century following repeated Anglo-Saxon invasions. After becoming the Kingdom of Essex’s capital in the eighth century, the town saw several attacks from the Vikings a century later. Danish settlers then established Londinium as England’s first urban center of trade and business. The city has survived several wars, fires, and epidemics throughout the centuries before becoming the current London.

Many believe that London is the world’s cultural capital. The culture revolves around music, festivals, and museums, among other things. The city is particularly famed for its West End and theater quarter. Also, London hosts notable attractions like the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Tale Gallery, The O2, and the Notting Hill Carnival. Moreover, the city boasts a spirited nightlife through theater, comedy, and music. Home to several professional sports teams, London has hosted a variety of international sporting events such as the Summer Olympics. From football and cricket to rugby and tennis, the city has a name when it comes to sports.

A world-renowned city, London has a very strong business appeal. In 2018, the city produced about $650 billion in GDP, while its metropolitan area generated about $1 trillion or one-third of the UK GDP. The biggest multinational companies in the world have chosen London as their international headquarters. They include HSBC, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, Barclays, Unilever, and GlaxoSmithKline, among others. London is also home to some of the best higher education institutes in the world, including Imperial College, King’s College, the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and The Queen Mary University of London.
