Culture, History, and Business

Strasbourg was founded roughly around 12 BC as a Roman military camp. During the Medieval and later ages, Strasbourg found itself the scene of many confrontations and military engagements. Its location on the Rhine—considered one of the “natural borders” of France—meant it often switched back and forth between French and German control. It was also an important city during the Protestant Reformation and a pioneer in printing, with Johannes Gutenberg calling the city home at one point. The city suffered greatly during World War II due to Nazi occupation and Allied bombing raids, but after the war control reverted back to France.

The city has flourished since the end of the war and is now most famous for being one of the capitals of Europe, hosting the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. The large number of European institutions plays an important role in the city’s economy, while education, tourism and the Port of Strasbourg are also significant sectors.

Strasbourg has one of the most robust real estate markets in all of France, with prices historically the highest in the country outside of Paris. The city is ideally located in the center of Western Europe and boasts a plethora of attractions, museums and historic sites. That has helped it become a major tourist destination, with its historic city center the first such city center in the world to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Properties in the city center are highly desirable from a real estate perspective due to their excellent potential for short-term rentals for tourists.

Additionally, because Strasbourg hosts many international institutions, it attracts a number of out-of-town visitors who are in the city on official business. Short-term rental properties, including outside of the city center, hold appeal for these travelers as well. While prices for buying property are high, they have stabilized in recent years and some districts are relatively affordable.
