Discover Lisbon's Real Estate

Lisbon is Portugal’s economic, cultural, and political center, and undoubtedly one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Nestled on the banks of the broad Tagus River, Lisbon’s maze of historic streets that wind their way up steep hills are a joy to discover. While the rest of the world is quickly waking up to Lisbon’s charms, this city on the edge of the continent remains highly affordable and one of Europe’s best real estate deals.

Culture, History, and Business

With roots going back more than 2,000 years, Lisbon and its sheltered harbor on the Atlantic has long been an important site. During the Medieval Ages, Lisbon was occupied by the Moors and their legacy can still be seen in the architecture of the city, especially in the Alfama district. During the 16th century, Portugal became a leader in the Age of Discovery and Lisbon was the capital of a global empire that included colonies in South America, India, Africa, and the Far East. While Lisbon was largely destroyed during a 1755 earthquake, the city rebuilt to become one of the most grand and impressive in the world.

Today Lisbon is no longer the colonial superpower it once was, but it is certainly the undisputed heart of Portugal. Almost every major company doing business in Portugal has their main office in Lisbon and the city has the country’s largest airport and best road and rail connections. Tourism has become especially important in recent years as people from around the world flock to Lisbon to take in its stunning architecture, beautiful streets, and fantastic culture.

Real Estate Appeal

For a long time Lisbon has been one of the cheapest cities in Western Europe, a fact that became even more true as Portugal struggled to overcome the brunt of the global financial crisis. While the economy is now recovering, prices remain well below the European average, which has led to a property boom in the capital.

Eager to encourage investment, the government has introduced tax and visa regulations that are highly favorable to foreigners. That fact, combined with a massive tourism boom, is why many foreigners are quickly realizing the amazing promise Lisbon holds as a real estate investment. Returns are especially good on short-term rental properties that cater to tourists, while a large expat community offers a good market for medium- to long-term rentals.
