Its seaport is an opening to the Central Valley and the regions beyond. The city is also home to several universities and colleges, including the University of the Pacific, which is California’s oldest university. Its huge inland port and famous Asparagus Festival helps the city receive around 100,000 visitors annually. Stockton is one of the top real estate markets. It is also number 20 on the list of 300 hottest markets best known for buyers and sellers.

Culture, History, and Business

Founded by Captain Charles Weber in 1849, Stockton was named after Commodore Robert Stockton. This was after the discovery of gold in the area a year earlier, an event that transformed the small settlement into a booming commercial hub. Stockton was the first Californian community to get an English name as other communities had been receiving Spanish or Native American names until then. The city was incorporated in 1850 and received its charter in 1851. The city’s early settlers were gold seekers from Mexico, Canada, the Pacific Islands, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Today, Stockton is a major shipping center for Northern California’s agricultural and manufactured goods.

An ethnically diverse community from its beginning, Stockton has a wealthy culture, which is a mix of different backgrounds of the people who settled here. The city welcomes the world to celebrate its culture through festivals, architecture, museums, galleries, and theaters. The Mexican Heritage Center and Gallery invite residents and visitors to enjoy Mexican culture that combines art, music, and dance. Stock Market is open from April to October, featuring musicians, culinary geniuses, and local makers. Art lovers can admire the Godwin Gallery.

In addition to Stockton’s wealthy history and culture, the city has a taste for business. Brick City has some of the biggest companies in the state of California. Some of them are Wal-Mart, Pacific Gas & Electricity, Kaiser Permanente, Diamond Walnut, The Groupe Company, and AT&T Communications. Besides, it is home to some of the biggest universities in the region, including the University of Pacific and Humphreys University. These companies and institutions contribute to the economy of the city and ensure healthy job growth.
